Hi, welcome to the forum. If it were me, I would get a kit or even a 'pre-fab' mosaic that is attached to a mesh underlayment, all you have to do is put it in place on mortar and grout it. Don't know where you live, but many retailers carry these and they are very nice. There's even some online stores if you Google mosaics. Good luck !

The best product for this is an adhesive/underlay combination - It is called TAVY Thin Skin / 007 . It is available at Lowes by special order. Check out the website www.tavytools.com . There are video segments from a home improvement TV show and one of them is specifically tile over formica countertop. The color chosen is not too exciting, but I have seen projects where 16X16 granite squares were used with pre-fab bullnose and it looks spectacular and done for about 25% of the cost of custom granite.
